Booking your first physiotherapy appointment is a great step. Knowing what to expect can make the visit feel easier.

Before your visit

It helps to bring:

  • Your extended health benefits card or insurance details
  • Your WSIB or auto insurance claim number, if your injury is from work or a car accident
  • A list of any medications you take
  • Any imaging reports (X-ray, ultrasound or MRI) or notes from your doctor, if you have them

Wear comfortable clothes that let you move easily and let your therapist see the area being treated. Shorts are helpful for knee, hip or ankle problems, and a tank top for shoulder or neck problems.

During your assessment

Your first visit is mostly about understanding what is going on. Your physiotherapist will usually:

  1. Talk with you about your symptoms, how and when they started, your health history, and what you want to get back to doing.
  2. Assess your movement, including strength, flexibility, balance and how the problem area moves.
  3. Explain what they found in plain language, and answer your questions.
  4. Plan your care together with you. This may include hands-on treatment, exercises, and other therapies offered at our clinic.

Many people also start some treatment or a few simple exercises at the first visit.

After your visit

You'll leave with a clear idea of next steps: how often to come in, what to do at home, and what progress to expect. Doing your home exercises between visits makes a real difference.
